Amanecer, marea baja (Garza Cabecinegra) Low tide at sunrise: Black-headed Heron |
There isn't a great diversity of birds In Zanzibar, little more than 170 species. Peanuts compared to the mainland Tanzanian territory. The landscape, however, is memorable. The southern zone is the best preserved and free of the dreadful resorts of up to 150 bugalows.
There are the remains of the ancient forests of mahogany, coconut, mango, mimosa and mangroves. The latter increasingly rare, replaced by aquaculture industries that provide our supermarkets with insipid frozen shrimp (I declared them a boycott long time ago). The beaches of the Southeast are still long stretches of fine and compact sand feasible for a bike ride during which you'll cross very few turists.
If the sunrise coincides with the low tide, herons will be already fishing in the shallow waters: Little egrets on the two variants of plumage, Dimorphic Egret, or Grey and Black-headed herons. Alongside them, sometimes one or two Saunders' or Greater-crested Terns.
