En mi viaje a Israel tuve oportunidad de ver y dibujar dos especies de águilas muy similares y no fáciles de identificar en el campo. El Águila Pomerana (A. pomarina) y el Águila Moteada (A. clanga) tienen un tamaño y colorido similar aunque en plumajes juveniles se aprecian diferencias y los adultos, vistos con detalle, también muestran caracteres propios como el tamaño del pico, el tono del plumaje de la cabeza o la cobertura de las calzas. En cualquier caso, es difícil a veces identificarlas pues se añade el problema de los individuos híbridos de ambas especies. Partiendo de mis notas y alguna fotografía, he realizado un estudio comparativo de adultos y jóvenes de las dos águilas.
On my trip to Israel I was able to see and draw two very similar species of eagles and not easy to identify in the field. The Lesser Spotted Eagle (A. pomarina) and the Greater Spotted Eagle (A. clanga) have similar size and plumage but seen in detail, juveniles and adults show noticeable differences, as beak size, tone of the plumage of the head or extent of legs feathers. The possibiity of finding hibrids of both species makes the problema even bigger.

From my notes and some pictures, I made a comparative study of young and adults of both species.

"Spaniard, Juan Varela Simo's oil, 'West Wind' also grabbed my attention as I came up to it in the galleries. As in Murtha's work previous, I also stood before this lovely beach scene and felt the wind on my cheek and the soft spray of sand grains as they blew up. I really connected with this work as the composition certainly was one after my own heart. All the elements were perfectly placed, beautifully rendered and allowed me to immerse myself into its world for a time. A good work of art should do just that, let us get lost in it and find much to jog memory or aid recall of experience. I certainly could see myself walking the beaches of southern New Jersey or Chincoteague Island standing before this one."

Birds in Art National Tour

La exposición Birds in Art que organiza el LYWAM será vista por cerca de 16.000 visitantes Mi obra Poniente, elegida por el jurado de la muestra, ha sido seleccionado con otras 59, de las cerca de 100 expuestas, para participar en la gira nacional que recorrerá distintas galerías y museos de Estados Unidos a lo largo de 2013.
Las salas que acogerán la muestra son las siguientes:

The Wildlife Experience, Parker, Colorado (Dic. 1, 2012 – Feb. 18, 2013); Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York (Marzo 9 – Mayo 5, 2013); Frank H. McClung Museum, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Mayo 25 – Agosto 18, 2013); and Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas (Sep. 14 – Nov. 16, 2013).

The opening of the 2012 edition of Birds in Art was another phenomenal success and it can be anticipate that 16,000+ visitors will view the exhibition during its nine weeks at the Woodson Art Museum.

Esta acuarela está realizada sobre papel Arches de 300 g, 51 x 36 cm. Creo que correspondería a un ave de cerca de dos años, ya que los tonos de plumaje son más claros y en la cola comienzan aparecer una franja blanca. La cera del pico ya amarillea.

This is a watercolour on Arches paper, 300 grs, 20 x 14 in. This could be a young bird around two years old. The plumage is lighter and there's a whitish band in the tail. The bill is becoming yellow.

De mi viaje a Noruega traje apuntes y alguna foto y estoy haciendo estudios de plumaje de aves jóvenes. No encuentro mucha información sobre los plumajes de transición de joven a adulto. Durante los 4 a 5 años que tardan en alcanzar la madurez reproductora, el plumaje se va aclarando, la cola se torna blanca y el pico y el iris amarillo. El joven de primer año es muy oscuro y tiene el pico negro.

From my trip to Norway I brought sketches and some photos and I'm working out plumage studies of young birds. I can not find much information on the transition plumages from youth to adulthood. During the 4-5 years it takes to reach reproductive maturity, the plumage becomes lighter, tail turns to white and beak and eye yellow. The 1st summer young is very dark and has a black bill.
